THE CELLOPHANE EXIT
Here's something you've probably never thought about: that plastic sleeve around your cigar.
Almost every premium cigar comes wrapped in a thin plastic cellophane sleeve. It's been standard practice for decades — it protects the wrapper during shipping and retail handling. Makes sense, right?
The problem is that plastic cellophane creates permanent waste, and it doesn't actually breathe. If you're aging cigars in a humidor for months or years, that non-porous plastic can actually interfere with how the tobacco develops. Some long-term aging enthusiasts have always removed the cellophane for that reason.
In 2026, a growing number of boutique cigar brands are switching to biodegradable, plant-based sleeves — materials that protect the cigar just as well as plastic, but break down naturally and actually allow better humidity exchange during aging. It's a small change that's better for the environment and, arguably, better for the cigar.
It's the kind of thing that doesn't make headlines, but it matters. And it's a sign that the premium cigar industry is maturing in the right direction.

THIS WEEK'S CIGAR: FERIO TEGO METROPOLITAN 30 YEARS

This is one of the most refined, elegant cigars I've smoked this year — and it's a great example of the sustainability trend in action. Ferio Tego, under master blender Michael Herklots, uses eco-conscious packaging and biodegradable sleeves for their premium releases.
But the packaging isn't why you should smoke this. The cigar itself is exceptional.
The Dominican Connecticut wrapper is silky and golden, with a subtle natural sweetness. It opens with vanilla bean and white chocolate — incredibly smooth and approachable. The middle introduces a warm nuttiness, like cashews or toasted almonds, with a touch of light floral sweetness. The finish is clean, buttery, and completely free of bitterness.
This is a morning cigar. A coffee-on-the-porch cigar. A "I just want to relax and not think about anything" cigar. If you're newer to smoking and still building your palate, this is one of the best smokes you can have.

SIP & SMOKE: MORNING COFFEE
Skip the spirits on this one. The Ferio Tego Metropolitan is best paired with a good cup of coffee — specifically a medium roast pour-over or a cappuccino with a little cream.
The natural bitterness of coffee balances the sweet vanilla and white chocolate notes of the wrapper, while the cream mirrors the buttery texture of the smoke. It's the kind of pairing that makes a Tuesday morning feel like a Saturday.
